WHAT IS COMPASSION?

What are the most important elements of Compassion: Respect and dignity? Loving care? Empathy and humor? If you answered yes to all of these, you are getting closer to the heart of compassion. It is hard to define compassion, because we tend to use words like “sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others.” In healthcare, compassion is an act of the will. It is not simply an emotion or some gut reaction.

Compassion is “love, touch, confidence, sincerity, care, hope, and honesty. It is your whole entity.” (Melissa Hart, RN). Compassion is our whole entity at Evangeline Home Health. It defines our Mission, Vision, and Values for the past 46 years. We love our patients, we touch our patients, we are confident, sincere, caring, hopeful and honest. It is the way we want to be treated. It is compassion.
