IN THE FIRST HOURS AFTER HURRICANE LAURA RAVAGED OUR COMMUNITY, a silent but powerful force was mobilizing: Evangeline Home Health Nurses. Nurses, who were barely out of harm’s way themselves, were busy preparing to make the trek to the homes of Lake Charles’ most vulnerable, our elderly and sick, who were still in the city needing health care. These nurses, affectionately called Evangeline’s Angels, were living in less than ideal conditions along with thousands of others. But they were out in unstable conditions before many were not. If asked they would tell you why, “it’s a sense of duty, a calling, a commitment to be there for those in need.” We know without that courage and commitment, many people needing health care would not receive it.
